Cumin Rice

Recipe #6 - Rebel Queen

I made this delicious and easy little recipe to go along with my Durga Dal Daal. They go together phenomenally. Trust me. 

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 2 teaspoons cumin seeds

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (add more to taste)

  • 1 cup brown rice (If you wish to be more traditional, use basmati or brown basmati rice)

  • 2 cups water

Instructions:

  1. Wash rice thoroughly and drain

  2. Warm oil in a medium-sized pot over medium heat

  3. Add cumin seeds and salt, and cook until cumin seeds begin to sizzle and become very fragrant (about 10-15 seconds) - watch carefully not to burn!

  4. Add rice, and stir thoroughly to incorporate cumin 

  5. Add water and bring to a boil (here you can add saffron, if desired)

  6. Reduce temperature to low and cover

  7. Simmer for 45 min-1 hour until all water is absorbed (or cook according to package directions if not using med-grain brown rice)

  8. Fluff with fork

  9. Enjoy alongside your favorite Indian dish!
