Hello! I'm Anna.

Welcome to The Literary Vegan.

Each month, I choose a book to read, and each week, I create a new vegan recipe inspired by said book. Join me for an adventure in literature and cuisine!

The Black Flamingo: Recipe #4

This one isn’t mentioned in the book more than once, nor is it intigral to the plot… but it is a dish that I absolutely LOVE, so when I saw it mentioned, I grabbed onto it.

This is served at Michael’s family’s Christmas dinner, along with many other yummy-sounding dishes:

Christmas Day it’s me, Mum, and Anna, but Mum’s made a lot for just three of us. She’s done a nut roast and a turkey with roast potatoes and vegetables. There’s vegan stuffing, normal stuffing, pigs in blankets, vegan cocktail sausages; there’s vegan gravy and normal gravy. — excerpt from The Black Flamingo

Ingredients:

  • 1 can Pillsbury crescent roll dough (or other vegan pastry dough)

  • 1 package vegan sausages/hotdogs (I used Field Roast maple apple breakfast sausages)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Slice the 8 perforated pastry triangles into halves, to make 16 triangles.

  3. Slice sausages into 1-2 inch pieces.

  4. Roll sausages up into pastry and place on ungreased cookie sheets.

  5. Bake for about 10 min, or until nicely golden brown.

  6. Cool a bit and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

  7. Enjoy!
